March marks a meaningful milestone for Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington. In March 2001, the organization officially registered as a charitable affiliate, launching a local effort to create affordable homeownership opportunities for families across Guelph and Wellington County. What began as a small, volunteer-driven initiative has grown into a community movement that has helped dozens of families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable housing.

In the early years, Habitat builds in our region focused primarily on single-family and semi-detached homes. Volunteers, tradespeople, donors, and partner families worked side by side on build sites across Wellington County and Guelph. These early projects helped establish Habitat as a trusted community partner, demonstrating that affordable homeownership could transform lives while strengthening neighbourhoods.

Over time, the needs of our community changed. As housing prices rose and the local housing crisis deepened, Habitat Guelph Wellington recognized that the traditional model of building one home at a time would not be enough to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. In response, the organization began scaling its impact by building larger multi-unit developments that could support more families at once.

This shift led to some of the largest Habitat communities ever built locally. Cityview Village in Guelph (2018–2020) welcomed 28 families into a new stacked townhome community. More recently, Garafraxa Village in Fergus (2022–2025) has been welcoming homeowners into a 32-unit development that will ultimately provide stability and opportunity for dozens of families. Looking ahead, Habitat’s next major project, Speedvale Commons in Guelph, will continue this momentum with a new 30-home community that reflects the evolving approach to affordable housing.
Supporting these builds are the organization’s two ReStores in Guelph and Fergus. These unique social enterprises sell donated furniture, appliances, and building materials, with proceeds helping fund local homebuilding efforts. Every purchase and donation helps turn everyday items into opportunities for families to access safe, affordable housing.

Over the past 25 years, thousands of volunteers, donors, tradespeople, and community partners have contributed their time, expertise, and resources to Habitat’s mission. Build sites have inspired young people to pursue careers in the skilled trades, strengthened corporate and community partnerships, and created lasting friendships through programs such as Women Build and Community Build. Most importantly, they have created housing stability for families who otherwise might never have had a path to homeownership.
As Habitat marks this anniversary, the focus is not only on the past, but also on the future. The need for affordable housing has never been greater, and Habitat continues to evolve to meet that challenge by building communities that provide stability, opportunity, and a sense of belonging.
Throughout 2026, Habitat Guelph Wellington will celebrate this milestone with a series of events recognizing the families, supporters, and volunteers who have made the past 25 years possible. Celebrations will begin with a ReStore community celebration on Saturday, March 28, followed later in the year by a key ceremony welcoming the remaining homeowners to Garafraxa Village, a groundbreaking for Speedvale Commons, and the return of a beloved favourite, the Habitat House Party fundraiser this November.

It is a year to reflect on how far we have come together, and to look ahead to the next chapter. Because when a community comes together to build homes, it builds something even more powerful; opportunity, belonging, and a future where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.
