Every Habitat home is more than bricks and mortar. It is a foundation for dreams, growth, and new beginnings. This is the story of one remarkable family whose journey with Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington began in 2020 in Guelph. With strength and determination, they made their first home in our Cityview Village community as a couple with a small child, where stability and hope began to take root. Since then, their family has grown and so has their story. With their next chapter on the horizon, they are exploring the possibility of a move to our new community in Garafraxa Village in Fergus, continuing a journey shaped by love, resilience, and the promise of a stable future.
“Bereket was living in Israel, and I was in Eritrea. After we got married, Bereket moved to Canada and brought me here so we could start our life together. We have now been living in Canada for six years.
Before partnering with Habitat for Humanity, we lived in a small, old one-bedroom apartment. The rent was very expensive, and it was hard to make ends meet. When we heard about Habitat for Humanity, we saw a new possibility for our future — the dream of owning a home. With their support, that dream became a reality.
This home was not just a place to live — it gave us the opportunity to grow, learn, and achieve our goals. I was able to begin my nursing program and also study Business Administration. I successfully completed both and found a job in my field. Bereket also took courses and completed them successfully. These achievements became possible because the Habitat home program made our mortgage affordable, never exceeding 30% of our income.
More than anything, this home gave us the stability to grow our family. In this beautiful and safe space, we welcomed our three children: Ami, Lillian, and Maerg.
Habitat for Humanity has truly been a life-changer for us. It gave us the chance to build a better future, achieve success, and raise our family with hope and dignity.

We are thrilled to be completing the homeownership process, and handing over the keys to 22 families at Garafraxa Village in Fergus this October! We are currently building our Garafraxa Village Community in Fergus which offers 32 stacked townhomes with 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom unit options. The first of these units will be move-in ready for Habitat families this fall!
The community offers accessible unit options, 1 parking space per unit, in-suite laundry, and private balconies for all above-grade units. We are seeking applicants for our affordable homeownership program, attainable homeownershipand market purchase options.
