Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington Welcomes Families Home at Community Celebration

Fergus, ON – October 18, 2025 – Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington opened the doors to new beginnings with a joyful community celebration at Garafraxa Village in Fergus. Families received the keys to their new Habitat homes, marking the first phase of completion of this 32-unit affordable housing community.

“Affordable homeownership changes the trajectory of families for generations,” said Steve Howard, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington. “The support from the Government of Canada, along with hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, and local partners, made this milestone possible. Today, we celebrate the teamwork that turned these homes from plans into places of belonging.”

Garafraxa Village represents thousands of volunteer hours and the collective generosity of local businesses, donors, and tradespeople. It stands as a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to make housing affordable for all.

“A neighbourhood is more than houses; it’s the people, the dreams, and the future being built here,” said the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “The federal government is proud to have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to make this housing development happen. Because of this collaborative effort, more families now have a high-quality and affordable place to call home.” Through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada has committed over $1.2 million towards Habitat Guelph Wellington projects, including these townhomes. This includes a $238,745 Black Families Funding investment to support equity and access to homeownership opportunities.

Since 2019, the Government of Canada has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Canada to build more than 800 homes across the country through a $65.1 million national investment through its Affordable Housing Fund, empowering more families to achieve safe, affordable housing.
