How to Apply for a Home

Step 1

Check your eligibility

Start by taking our Eligibility Questionnaire. It’s quick and easy to complete on your phone, and it will tell you if you meet the basic criteria to move forward with an online application

Step 2

Complete application

If you are eligible, you will be invited to complete a full application. Required information will include submitting documents with detailed information about your income, employment history, savings, debt, and your current housing situation.

Step 3

Mortgage Pre-Approval with external lender

Habitat staff will help connect you with our supported lenders. Each family must apply for a external first mortgage, and receive a mortgage pre-approval to proceed.

Step 4

Interviews

If your application moves forward, there will be a home visit interview, staff interview, and reference checks before our final decision is made.

Step 5

Approval

Your family will be matched to a home and your homeownership journey begins!

Step 6

Complete volunteer hours

After your application is approved, you will begin your volunteer hour commitment of up to 500 hours. This includes participation in our homeownership education program to help prepare you for homeownership.

If your home is already constructed, you must complete 10% of your required hours before move-in, with the remainder to be completed within a year.

Step 7

Move in

When your home is ready and you have completed your volunteer hour commitment, it’s time to receive your keys and move in!
